It includes, for example, family allowances, retirement pensions, unemployment insurance, sickness and disability insurance, housing benefit, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paleblue-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>Adaptive Social Protection (ASP) goes beyond these traditional mechanisms, by adding responsiveness and flexibility to address unforeseen crises and shocks.<\/strong><\/strong><br><br>It involves, for example, temporarily extending social cover to include people affected by a natural disaster, or anticipating a shock by granting a cash transfer before the expected arrival of a flood in order for families to be prepared.<br><br>Therefore, adaptive social protection can strengthen traditional social protection systems with more dynamic, preventive and integrated systems, in order to better manage crises and strengthen people\u2019s resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3081-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17619\" style=\"width:404px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3081-edited.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3081-edited-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3081-edited-1260x788.jpg 1260w, https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3081-edited-1536x960.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Cash transfer (Mauritania)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3054-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3054-edited.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3054-edited-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3054-edited-1260x788.jpg 1260w, https:\/\/www.alliance-sahel.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AUD_3054-edited-1536x960.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-727b23adc7757953ab3c8fc0c004d913\"><strong><strong>Adaptive Social Protection in the Sahel and West Africa<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Droughts and floods are becoming increasingly frequent and severe in the Sahel, one of the world\u2019s poorest regions.&nbsp;<strong>These climatic shocks further exacerbate weak household livelihoods, fragility and growing insecurity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paleblue-background-color has-background\"><strong><strong>In the Sahel, adaptive social protection is a crucial instrument to address the unequal impacts of climate change and strengthen the resilience of the poorest and most vulnerable members of society.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Sahel countries have demonstrated their willingness to strengthen social protection and develop adaptive social protection systems.&nbsp;<\/strong>While each country has progressed along its own path, all have implemented at least one social safety net and several social protection programmes, both contributory and non-contributory. However, overall coverage of these programmes remains low, varying between 6% and 20%, compared with a global average of 47%. This low coverage also reflects limited public spending in this sector. ASP strengthens resilience by helping households to maintain their consumption and use of basic services during crises, rather than selling their assets to survive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In Niger<\/strong>, during a drought, beneficiary households maintained their level of consumption, unlike non-beneficiaries, who had to reduce it by 24%.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Mali<\/strong>, social safety nets increased by 56% the chances of a teenage girl enrolled in school progressing to the next grade.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>At community level<\/strong>, ASP programs have a substantial impact on the local economy. For every dollar invested, the incomes in the local economy increase by between $1.30 to $2.50.
