The Sahel Facility finances community-based projects in the Sahel countries: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad. Its aim is to support communities in the peripheral and disadvantaged areas of the Sahel countries by harnessing the region’s potential and creating economic opportunities, as well as promoting peace and social cohesion.

The idea of creating the Facility was developed in 2021 by members of the Sahel Alliance during a steering committee meeting. It was intended to establish a more agile and flexible financing instrument to complement bilateral cooperation efforts. The Foundation “Sahel Facility” finances its work through grants from various donors among the Sahel Alliance members.
Decisions on financing by the Sahel Facility are made through calls for proposals. Projects are implemented by national and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that strive to unlock the potential of local communities in the Sahel region and to promote peace, social cohesion and prosperity.
